![]() To make sure you are in Normal mode, simply hit the Esc (Escape) key. If you have text, you can move around with your arrow keys or other navigation keystrokes (which you will see later). Vim has other modes, like Visual, Select, and Ex-Mode, but Normal, Insert, and Command Line modes are good enough for us. Here are three you need to know to do Vim basics: Modeĭefault for navigation and simple editingįor explicitly inserting and modifying textįor operations like saving, exiting, etc. Hello, Vim! Now, here is a very important concept in Vim, possibly the most important to remember: Vim has multiple modes. Let's create a file named HelloWorld.java by typing vim HelloWorld.java. The good news is you can use the same command to create or open a file in Vim: vim, where represents the target file name you want to create or modify. I wanted to know: How can I open and close a file without saving my changes? Remember when I said I was scared to use Vim at first? Well, the scary part was thinking, "what if I change an existing file and mess things up?" After all, several computer science assignments required me to work on existing files by modifying them. Step 1: Create and close a Vim file without saving Now it's time to move on to the fun part-starting to use Vim. Go inside the directory by typing cd Tutorial. ![]() Then, type mkdir Tutorial to create a new directory called Tutorial. Once a terminal window is up, type the ls command to list the current directory. (Since Vim is also available on MacOS, Mac users can use these instructions, also.) Open a console terminal from your Linux operating system. Step 0: Open a console windowīefore jumping into Vim, you need to do a little preparation. But the starting point always matters, and I want to make the beginning experience as easy as possible, and you can explore the rest on your own. This will neither make you an expert nor even scratch the surface of many of Vim's powerful capabilities. In this article, I will walk through Vim (based on my personal experience) just enough so you can get by with it as an editor on a Linux system. ![]() As for Emacs, well, I sort of gave up, but I'm happy I stuck with Vim. Using Vim for the first time scared me-I did not want to mess anything up! But once I got the hang of it, things became much easier and I could appreciate the editor's powerful capabilities. I used Nano sometimes, but I heard awesome things about Vi/Vim and Emacs and really wanted to give them a try (mainly because they looked cool, and I was also curious to see what was so great about them). For students who could use the shell but weren't used to the console-based editor, the popular choice was Nano, which provided good interactive menus and an experience similar to Windows' graphical text editor. Students could use a graphical text editor like Kate, which was installed on the lab computers by default.

The images on this site are for on-screen viewing only. We got a chance to talk for a little bit.Īll images, photos, pictures etc are copyright by The New Diner and/or the owner listed with the picture. I saw David Allen, just as I was leaving. I would come back to this Zankou location to try their roasted chicken. Overall there are only minor differences between the Zankou in Pasadena, which is a part of the Zankou company, and the Montebello location, which is owner by another family member. Some people have said Zankou is cash only, they just misunderstood the sign. They have two cashiers, one for all transactions and another one, just cash only. I hate turnips, so I didn't touch them, but I never knew what kind of veggies they were until today. I finally found out what those purple veggies are pickled turnips. They either put to much water in the rice or they took the rice out of the pit before it was fully cooked. I'm not a fan of tangy, sour hummus.īut the rice was too watery. I like the hummus, very mild flavor, smooth, and fresh. There are the same spices as the Montebello location. But a nice idea putting both white and dark meat. The dark meat was tender, flavorful and moist. The chicken was a combination of white and dark meat. The Montebello location also didn't use tri tip, which is a sirloin cut. The tri tip was pretty flavorful, the spices were different than the spices used at the Montebello location. I got the combination kebobs, tri tip beef and chicken, $10.96, that came with basmati rice, pickled turnips, hummus and pita bread. ![]() ![]() I did not see any mention of them closing on April 24th, on their website, and I checked on Fri April 23rd. So Zankou should have put something on their website about closing on April 24th. While I knew how important, April 24th is to Armenians, others may not. ![]() This Zankou still had a sign on their door, informing customers they would be closed on Sat, April 24th, to remember the Armenian Genocide. So I decided I wanted to try a Zankou, that is listed on their website. But, the Montebello location was opened by a family member who is bickering with another family member. I'm not going to bore everybody with the story. A LA Times story gave a brief history about the infighting. The first time I tried Zankou in Montebello, I did not know about the infighting between the owners of Zankou. ![]() Once the type of flow behavior has been identified, more can be understood about the way components of the system interact. At the most basic level, this involves making measurements with whichever Brookfield Viscometer is available and drawing some conclusions based on the descriptions of flow behavior that follow. The next step is to gather preliminary rheological data to determine what type of flow behavior is characteristic of the system under consideration. For the moment, assume this information is known and several possibilities have been identified. To begin, consider the question, "Can some rheological parameter be employed to correlate with an aspect of the product or process?" To determine this, an instinct must be developed for the kinds of chemical and physical phenomena which affect the rheological response. They are also a way to predict and control a host of product properties, end use performance and material behavior. Rheological measurements allow the study of chemical, mechanical, and thermal treatments, the effects of additives, or the course of a curing reaction. ![]() Such measurements can be employed as a quality check during production or to monitor and/or control a process. Rheological measurements are also useful in following the course of a chemical reaction. This relationship is useful in polymer synthesis, for example, because it allows relative differences to be seen without making molecular weight measurements. It has been suggested that rheology is the most sensitive method for material characterization because flow behavior is responsive to properties such as molecular weight and molecular weight distribution. Knowing its rheological behavior, therefore, is useful when designing pumping and piping systems. For example, a high viscosity liquid requires more power to pump than a low viscosity one. For this purpose, flow behavior is an indirect measure of product consistency and quality.Īnother reason for making flow behavior studies is that a direct assessment of processability can be obtained. ![]() We have the requisite "know how and experience" to be your partner in the selection of proper instrumentation to control your process.Īnyone beginning the process of learning to think Rheo-Logically must first ask the question, "Why should I make a viscosity measurement?" The answer lies in the experiences of thousands of people who have made such measurements, showing that much useful behavioral and predictive information for various products can be obtained, as well as knowledge of the effects of processing, formulation changes, aging phenomena, etc.Ī frequent reason for the measurement of rheological properties can be found in the area of quality control, where raw materials must be consistent from batch to batch. This places the instrument user in a position in which his own appreciation of the flow phenomena involved, coupled with the instrument manufacturer's "know how and experience", must be brought to bear.īrookfield was a pioneer in the development of instrumentation for viscosity measurement and data handling and a stimulus to the development of the science. Today's instruments vary from the simple to the complex: from counting the seconds for a liquid to drain off a stick to very sophisticated automatic recording and controlling equipment. The selection of the right viscometer from the scores of instruments available to meet the need of any application is a difficult proposition. There are many different techniques for measuring viscosity, each suitable to specific circumstances and materials. ![]() Rheological relationships help us to understand the fluids we are working with so that we can either know how they are behaving or force them to behave according to our needs. They know that viscosity measurements are often the quickest, most accurate and most reliable way to analyze some of the most important factors affecting product performance. Many manufacturers now regard viscometers as a crucial part of their research, development, and process control programs. Anyone involved with flow characterization, in research or development, quality control or fluid transfer, at one time or another gets involved with some type of viscosity measurement. Viscosity measurements are made in conjunction with product quality and efficiency. Brookfield deals with liquids and semi-solids. Viscosity is a principal parameter when any flow measurements of fluids, such as liquids, semi-solids, gases and even solids are made.
The game plays out as a typical hack ‘n’ slash action RPG, with each of the four face buttons corresponding to a different equipped weapon. While the first game focused on parodying classic fantasy settings and fairy tales, DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue sets its sights on more modern culture, with settings that include World War II-stylized battlefields, jungles and pirates, the Old West, alien invaders, and of course, the North Pole.įor the most part, Thongs of Virtue has the same gameplay as its predecessor. ![]() With this new mission in mind, DeathSpank sets out on a new journey to slay these corrupted folk heroes, ruining religion, Christmas, and day-time television for millions of children worldwide. The location of the final Thong, the Thong of Peace, is still a mystery. The Thong of Generosity belongs to jolly old Santa Claus, while the Thong of Justice is worn by DeathSpank himself. The Thong of Compassion is in the possession of an evil nun, and the Thong of Cuisine is worn by a famous TV chef. One of six corrupted Thongs of Virtue, Sandy is on a mission to collect all of them together so that they might be destroyed. With the defeat of Lord Von Prong, the mysterious Sandy has revealed to our venerable hero the secret the villain bears beneath his knickers, and source of his corruption: the mighty Thong of Courage. Luckily, the gameplay was already solid while the plot and humor is really what drove the game forward, making Thongs of Virtue a perfect, if near-identical, sequel in every way. This should come as little surprise, given the short time between the games’ releases. While the story and world are all brand new, the core of the gameplay remains identical to the original title. Unfortunately, that also means that there’s very little to say about DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue that hasn’t already been said. But a shock though it may be, it’s a welcome one, because Thongs of Virtue is every bit as witty and entertaining as the original. DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue‘s announcement and subsequent release was a shock, especially when it was revealed that the game was actually completed prior to Ron Gilbert’s departure. The last thing I ever expected was to not only be hearing about, but actually playing that sequel less than three months later. With creative mastermind Ron Gilbert departing Hothead Games shortly after development finished, the future of the Dispensor of Justice was precarious. And there’s more! DeathSpank does not fight alone but with the amazingly cool Ninja Steve Greedy (a Ninja named Steve, I know, I know! Don’t we ever stop?) letting your real-life flesh friends play alongside you in two-player local co-op as DeathSpank quests for the six Thongs of Virtue! DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue is the high quality, low priced romp for XBLA/PSN that’s less filling than the other brands, and tastes great.Created by Ron Gilbert, the legendary mind behind Monkey Island, DeathSpank is the rarest of the rare: an honestly funny, fun video game. When I reviewed DeathSpank back in July, one of the things that I lamented was the uncertain nature of a sequel. The action is easily accessible for short bursts of unsupervised fun, but the story is revealed over ten to fifteen hours of gameplay. ![]() What the hell is wrong with you people? Don’t JUDGE HIM!ĭeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue is filled to bursting with hundreds of weapons, armor sets, witty dialog, improbable scenarios, unexpected villains, and challenging bosses. It’s like, he’s a well rounded character not content with just smashing and stabbing things, he needs to think too, you know? He has feelings. ![]() With all the hacking and the slashing, DeathSpank makes some time on the side to explore his puzzle solving hobby. We say this along with other, less printable things, of course, but the jist is there. Internally we say it’s what would happen if you put those two games in a sack with a Mad Magazine joke collection and let them fight it out Thunderdome-style. In press releases we say DeathSpank is Monkey Island meets Diablo, a hack and slash action RPG set on a massive, dangerous, world shaped like an Edison Gramaphone Cylinder. But then again, we like to think a lot of things. We like to think DeathSpank is jam-packed of what is missing in video games - story, solid gameplay, and (intentional) humor. Now that the palate is cleansed, let’s consider DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue, created by Ron Gilbert, the legendary mind behind Monkey Island. Once in a lifetime a piece of entertainment can transcend its medium and reach out to the world in new and exciting ways making people stop, think and expand their definition of art. Most Wanted truly is a lot more open than other "open world" games that we've seen before, which leads to some spectacularly addictive racing as well as for evading the ever present law enforcement. Now, "interaction" here often times means a sort of physically impossible punting of sturdy objects by your meteoric vehicle – light poles and mailboxes careen up and over your hood following a high-speed impact – but it also means that there are shortcuts, jumps, and switchbacks to find, just about everywhere you roam. The tradeoff for this less-than-pristinely-realized environment is that just about every last pixel of it is interactive. Especially coming from the sharp and pristine world of Forza Horizon, some of the Need For Speed surroundings just feel thin and two-dimensional, too often. The backgrounds in the game – landscapes, buildings, skies, etc – are less thoughtfully illustrated, however. ![]() Transitions through lightscapes, ambient debris like falling leaves, gravel and water on the road, and other layers of graphical detail around ones speeding vehicle are rendered really nicely. The details of the cars have been artfully crafted, with each vehicle looking utterly faithful to its real-world counterpart, in just about every state of being that it can achieve throughout play (basically minty new through horribly crashed). ![]() Most Wanted is a bit bipolar when it comes to graphical presentation. Once you've driven a car, it is accessible to you at any point during play. Instead, Most Wanted drops you right into the action with a Porsche 911 Carrera S, then asks only that you drive by other available cars (marked on your screen with a giant brand logo hovering above them), stop and then get in the driver's seat. None of the cars are particularly difficult to get ahold of, as the Need For Speed team has done away with the longstanding driving game convention of starting off in something slow and earning your way into faster and more expensive metal. Aiding you in this quest are some 41 vehicles, all of which can be modified to become more capable handlers and faster overall. The goal of this loosely plotted game is to become the "most wanted" badboy racer in the mythical city of Fairhaven. While the team at Criterion has actually done a rather nice job with the driving physics that power this new Need For Speed – steering, braking, acceleration and the like all feel nicely sorted (if not as realistic as can be found in Gran Turismo, for instance), the best parts of the experience all involve crazily acrobatic maneuvers, and reality-defying racing. Of course, Most Wanted is far more "arcade" in its style of gameplay than even the newly released Forza title. In other words: The emphasis in both games is on driving fun, rather than a true-to-life racing experience. Both games offer open-world, sandbox-style driving environments for players to explore, both boast a seriously good-looking selection of vehicles, and both offer the ability to casually top 200 miles per hour while looking for stuff to crash into and/or jump over. The new game arrives in the wake of critical praise for Forza Horizon, a challenger for racing-gamer dollars that shares quite a lot with Most Wanted. So, when the newest iteration of the game, Need For Speed: Most Wanted was announced, we knew immediately that we'd have to give it a run. Need For Speed is one of the longest-running and most popular franchises in the history of arcade-style racing titles – actually, you can ditch the qualifier, it's simply one of the biggest automotive video games, period. The Follow-Up To One Of Racing's Biggest Franchises Is A Thrill-A-Minute Hit Weight is crucially important in these physics-based puzzles, requiring you to build something strong enough to support the assets safely, but not too overbearing that the structure itself cannot be supported. The tools available for construction are the trusty trio of wood, steel and cable, with steel offering the most sturdiness and heaviest. In each area, there will be specific zones to build within and a very limited amount of nodes to build upon. Deciding what structures to build comes after figuring out what threats there are, meaning there’s often a need to create a safe passage and some crafty traps to thin the horde to progress. The difference here is that you’re trying to navigate a rather bleak apocalyptic world, filled with dangers from walkers, other desperate survivors, and deadly obstacles – and it blends together surprisingly well. The exception to that is Eugene however, whose lines have been written so impeccably you will no doubt read them in his voice within your mind.Īs for the predicaments at hand, well, the core Bridge Constructor principles remain, with the idea throughout being to design various structures from scratch to reach a specific point in a level. To really captivate the audience, the writing has to be far more intriguing and needs to make you care for the characters, which it doesn’t quite manage. That’s mainly due to the nature of almost every bit of storytelling coming in text-based dialogue between characters. You can also join my gaming adventures via Lets Play.Sure, it incorporates familiar faces like Daryl, Eugene and Michonne, alongside a handful of less interesting survivors such as Miles and Naomi, but you won’t be all that fussed about the happenings. If you enjoyed the review, you can follow me on Twitter, or check out something less wordy via Steam Curator Verdict: While it could use another coat of polish, Bridge Constructor Stunts is relatively solid.īridge Constructor Stunts was released on Steam Feb 23rd 2016. Summary: Action-packed puzzling with vehicles. This is certainly a big step in the right direction. Fantastic work! I truly hope ClockStone continues to build on this series. There was no Bridge Constructor game in 2015, but this beauty was worth the wait. Explosions sound decent, engines are low in the mix, and the rockabilly soundtrack tickles me in a way no woman can. While the graphics are a bit lacking in my book, the soundwork is a real treat. Every level features a variety of different paths, each vehicle has its own set of challenges to overcome, and landing that quadruple backflip is just plain fun. Overall, I really enjoyed my time with Bridge Constructor stunts. However, this is featured in previous games, and the choice is obviously not mine to make. This is an unfortunate design choice because it completely halts players from progressing. ![]() Unfortunately some levels have mandatory goals aside from just reaching the finish. More often than not your truck will explode from too much impact, but success tastes extremely sweet. Hitting the right speed and angle is a challenge. Not only must your jump be solid, but landing ramps are also sometimes required. The massive amount of hangtime present in the game gives a renewed sense of vigor to the series. Despite the extremely different style, this is surely my favorite installment thus far. ![]() This isn’t Bridge Constructor, it’s much more accurately called Jump Constructor… But that name sounds like a shoddily-made Mario ripoff, aside from not fitting the precedent set by the previous three games. A couple more levels in, realization dawned as I was instructed to create a jump to bridge a canyon. ![]() ![]() While there is a jump and plenty of sweet air to be had, I was puzzled by the lack of bridge construction. Upon starting Bridge Constructor Stunts you will drive a car straight to the finish. What was it that made the difference? Take a ride with me, as we look a little deeper at Bridge Constructor Stunts. None of these games truly gripped me… Until Bridge Constructor Stunts made its appearance. Build a bridge within a budget and reach your destination. While I could appreciate the first three versions for what they were, they were quite similar to puzzle games. Aside from the original game, there has also been Bridge Constructor Medieval and Bridge Constructor Playground. The Bridge Constructor series has seen quite a few different iterations. It's pretty funny how the game chose to give her character card that personality, it fits in a way. I find it funny that out of all my idols Yoshiko is always the one involved in scandals, normally involving her live streams in which she says or does something dumb, then when I try to moderate the situation she makes it worse somehow. You can park near the campground and start the walk from there. Getting there: Lake Elizabeth is an hour from Lorne (one of the nearest towns) and over 2 hours from Melbourne. To counteract these threats, Wildlife Queensland’s dedicated PlatypusWatch Network. The Otways is an incredible area for wildlife watching and we detail lots more opportunities in this post. Unfortunately, the platypus’s habitat in Queensland has shrunk by 27 per cent over 30 years, and its numbers are declining. We visited at dusk but I would recommend dawn if you can stomach an early start as we heard sightings are more frequent then and platypus prefer cool weather. It's worth noting that the loop does not hug the lake the whole way, it goes into dense bush at points which means you don't have the ability to be constantly on the lookout for platypus, which is why we chose to sit and wait quietly at the jetty. When you get there you can wait at the jetty or take the lake loop walk which is just under 5km in total. To reach the lake you need to take a 1km walking path (each way) which has one short steep section (despite the sign at the trail head making you think it will be much harder!). The drive to get here from Thredbo or Jindabyne is absolutely stunning through vast open plains dotted with huge rocks and boulders.ĭespite not getting as good a look at the platypus as we'd have liked it's still a magical spot and we were surrounded by wild koalas growling for over an hour which was a pretty special experience in its own right. Getting there: You’ll definitely need your own wheels for this one and the setting is quite remote. Unfortunately for us we were unlucky with actually catching sight of a platypus itself but I read so many reviews of people seeing them here that I still wanted to include it in this blog. There's a large viewing platform over the river and it was easy to spot the platypus burrows. The reserve is a beautiful place on the water and it would be a peaceful place to bring a picnic as you wait. It's actually quite far from the main areas most people stay when visiting the Snowy's (1 hour 50 from Thredbo and 1 hour 25 from Jindabyne) so it's a quiet spot and on our visit we were the only ones there!
